The Diet has two parts. The House of Representatives is the most powerful part. It can choose the Prime Minister. The House of Councillors is the second part.

In 1947, Japan started using a new Constitution. This is a set of rules for the country. It says that the people hold the power. It gave women the right to vote. It also says that Japan will not use war to settle fights. For a long time, one group has led the country. This is the Liberal Democratic Party, or LDP. The LDP has been in power since 1955. Many leaders have come from this group. This has made the LDP very strong in Japan.
