society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Trades Union Congress, or TUC, is a very large group of workers. It is a federation of 48 different trade unions. These unions work together to represent most unionized workers in England and Wales. Today, the TUC represents about 5.5 million members. Paul Nowak has been the General Secretary since January 2023. This group helps make sure people are treated fairly at work.

Decisions for the TUC happen in a specific way. Every September, they hold a big meeting called the Annual Congress. During the year, a smaller group called the General Council meets every two months. They make important decisions between the big meetings. An Executive Committee is also chosen from the Council members. Unions send delegates to the Congress based on how many members they have. Each year, the Congress also elects a President to lead for a while.

The history of the TUC goes back a long time. It was founded in the 1860s to give workers a stronger voice. The first official meeting was held in 1868 in Manchester. This happened because leaders in the North wanted more influence. In 1869, they met again in Birmingham to talk about big ideas. They discussed things like an eight-hour workday and free education. They even helped start the movement that became the Labour Party.

The TUC has helped change many laws for workers. In 1970, the Equal Pay Act made it illegal to pay women less than men for the same work. In 1999, a National Minimum Wage was set to help people with low pay. That same year, new rules were made to limit working hours. This was done to keep people healthy and safe. In 2007, the TUC helped win a ban on smoking in public places. They also fought for agency workers to get the same rights as permanent staff in 2011.

The TUC also keeps history alive for everyone. They run the Tolpuddle Martyrs Museum and a special festival every year. They also have a library that holds many important documents. This library started in 1922 and now has many digital collections. Their main office is called Congress House, which was built in 1958. The TUC continues to campaign for things like a £15 an hour minimum wage. They want to make sure the future of work is good for all.
