It is often used for women who are married. This title helps people show respect in letters or speech. In the United States and Canada, people usually add a period after the letters. In many Commonwealth countries, they do not use a period at all. People use this title when a woman does not have another rank. This might include titles like Doctor, Professor, or President. It is a small part of how we use language to be polite.

There are different ways to use this title in writing.

In the past, a woman might use her own first name. For example, Abigail Adams was called Mrs. Abigail Adams in 1774. Later, in the 1800s, it became common to use a husband's first name. Jane Austen wrote about this in her books using Mrs. John Dashwood. By the early 1900s, many people thought this way was the standard. Today, most women use their own first name with their husband's last name. This looks like Mrs. Jane Smith.

The word Mrs. has a very long history.

It started as a short way to write the word Mistress. Long ago, Mistress was used for women in the upper class. This included both married women and women who were not married. Writers like Daniel Defoe and Samuel Johnson used it this way. During the 17th century, people began to split the titles. They started using Mrs. for married women and Miss for unmarried women. This change was not fully reliable until the 1800s.

Many people have had different ideas about how to use this title.

Some feminists like Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucy Stone spoke out about it. They wanted to discuss how women were named. In the United Kingdom, high-ranking staff like nannies were often called Mrs. as a sign of respect. This was true even if they were not married. In the United States, women who were divorced had different ways to write their names. Some used their maiden name, while others used a form like Mrs. Jane Miller.

Today, many women choose their own way to be addressed. Some keep their own last names after they marry. Others use professional titles like Mayor or Doctor. If you are writing to a woman, it is polite to use Ms. This is because Ms. does not say if a woman is married or not. It is a safe and respectful choice for professional letters. Using the right name helps everyone feel seen and respected.
