An abbreviation is a shortened form of a word or a phrase.

People use several different ways to make them. One way is a contraction, which uses an apostrophe to replace letters. For example, "I'm" is a contraction for "I am." Another way is an initialism, which uses the first letter of a group of words. Examples include "FBI" or "USA." Sometimes, people pronounce these initialisms as a single new word. These special types are called acronyms, such as "NASA" or "SWAT." Abbreviations help us share information quickly and clearly.

There are many rules for how to write these short forms. One common rule is to use a full stop, or period, at the end. Some people believe you only use a period if you drop letters from the end of a word. Others, like the writers at "The Guardian," do not use periods at all. In the United States, people often include the period, such as in "Dr." or "Mrs." However, some groups like the "AMA" do not use periods in medical writing. It is important to be consistent when you write. Most publishers follow a special guide to keep their writing the same.

Abbreviations have been used for a very long time.

In early times, writing was a hard job. Many words were carved into heavy stone. People used short forms to save effort or to keep secrets. In ancient Greece and Rome, writers often used just one letter to stand for a word. During the 15th to 17th centuries, people used them to copy books faster. This helped them finish their work in less time. Even the old English poem "Beowulf" used many abbreviations to save space.

New technology changed how we use short words. In the 1990s, mobile phones became very popular. These phones had a limit of 160 characters for a single text message. Because space was tight, people created an informal style called "Textese." In a typical text message, 10% or more of the words might be abbreviated. Later, the website Twitter also used limits of 140 characters. This helped keep the habit of short writing alive. Today, we use these quick ways of writing every single day.

Sometimes, an abbreviation becomes so common that it turns into a regular word. When this happens, we stop using capital letters or periods for them. Examples of this include "sonar," "radar," and "laser." You might also see abbreviations used to talk about more than one thing. This is called making them plural. Some people add an apostrophe, like "PC's," but many guides say just to add a small "s," like "DVDs." Whether we use them for speed or for style, abbreviations are a huge part of how we communicate.
