Shorthand

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Shorthand is a special way of writing that focuses on speed. Instead of writing every letter, people use symbols or short marks. These marks can stand for whole words or common phrases.

This allows a trained writer to keep up with someone who is speaking. The process is often called stenography, which comes from Greek words meaning "narrow writing." Some people call it tachygraphy, which means "speedy writing." It is a wonderful tool for people like journalists who must take quick notes.

Writing in shorthand works by using clever abbreviations. Many systems are based on the alphabet but use different shapes. For example, Thomas Shelton’s system used simple symbols for consonants. He used the position of those symbols to show vowels.

If a symbol was placed above another, it changed the word. A symbol for "B" placed above "T" meant "bat." If the "T" was below the "B," it meant "but." This made it possible to write very complex ideas with just a few quick strokes.

People have been using fast writing for a very long time. The earliest signs were found in Ancient Greece on a marble slab.

In Ancient Rome, a man named Marcus Tullius Tiro created a system. He was a freedman who wanted to record the speeches of Cicero. His system, called Tironian notes, used thousands of different signs. In China, clerks used a fast, cursive style of writing for court records. They had to write quickly to record confessions in imperial courts.

Many famous people used shorthand to keep their thoughts safe. Samuel Pepys used Thomas Shelton’s system to write his famous diary. The scientist Isaac Newton also used shorthand in his notebooks.

Later, Isaac Pitman introduced a system in 1837 called Pitman shorthand. It is also called phonography because it focuses on sounds. In 1922, a man named Nathan Behrin set a record by writing 350 words per minute. This shows just how much skill it takes to master these systems.

Shorthand connects the way we speak to the way we write. In the United States, many people used Gregg shorthand, which was published in 1888. This system uses thin lines and is very smooth to write.

Even though we have machines now, shorthand is still around. Computers use autocomplete programs that act like a modern version of shorthand. These programs use word lists to finish phrases for us. It is a long history of humans finding ways to capture ideas quickly.
