You use a tool like a pen or a pencil to make marks. People call the formal styles of writing "hands." When you write in your own unique way, it is called your handwriting. This skill has been important for a very long time. It helps us share ideas and keep records of our lives.

Writing works in many different ways depending on the system used. Some systems use signs to represent whole ideas or syllables. Others use an alphabet where letters represent specific sounds. In China, characters represent whole morphemes, which are units of meaning. These characters can look very complex and beautiful.

Scribes once used sharpened reeds to press marks into wet clay. Others used ink on papyrus or wrote on stone and metal. People even used bones and shells for writing in ancient times.

History shows us how these styles changed over thousands of years. Around 3200 BC, the Sumerians used a system called cuneiform on clay. The Egyptians developed hieroglyphics and later used cursive scripts like hieratic. The Phoenicians created a 22-letter system without vowels around the eleventh century BC. The Greeks adapted this alphabet in the eighth century BC. They added vowels to create the script we recognize today.

These early changes helped create the many ways we write now.

Many famous styles emerged from these ancient roots. The Romans developed Latin writing using styles like square capitals and uncials. In the eighth century, Charlemagne ordered a standard style called Carolingian minuscule. Later, the dark and dense Gothic script became popular in Europe. In America, Platt Rogers Spencer became the "Father of American Penmanship." He published his system in 1848.

Writing connects different cultures through beautiful art and shared tools. In China, calligraphy is a highly valued art form. It is used to show the artistic personality of the writer. Japanese writing also grew from Chinese characters, called kanji. Today, students in North America use many different methods. These include the Zaner-Bloser and D'Nealian methods. Even though our tools change, the joy of penmanship remains.
