Logogram

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A logogram is a special written character. It represents a part of a language, like a word or a morpheme. This is different from an alphabet. In an alphabet, letters only represent sounds. But a logogram carries its own meaning.

People use logograms to share ideas through writing. They are part of a system called logography. Some logograms are very simple. For example, the ampersand symbol (&) is a logogram. It represents the word "and" in many languages. This symbol is used by English, Spanish, and Dutch speakers. It shows how one sign can serve many people.

Writing with logograms can work in several ways. Some systems use a trick called the rebus principle. This means using a sign for its sound instead of its meaning. This helps people write many words without needing a new sign for everything. Some scripts are called logosyllabic. These use signs to represent syllables. Other scripts are logoconsonantal. These focus on the consonants in a word. In Ancient Egyptian, they might ignore the vowels.

This makes the writing system much more flexible for the writer.

History shows that many early civilizations used logograms. The first big groups to use them were in Mesopotamia and Egypt. China and Mesoamerica also used logographic writing. In Egypt, they used hieroglyphs. These signs could be combined with determinatives. A determinative is a sign that narrows down a meaning. This helps a reader know exactly which word is being used. The Maya and Aztec people also had their own systems. These ancient ways of writing helped these cultures record their stories.

Chinese characters offer a great look at how logograms grow. Scholars say there are six different types of these characters. Some are pictograms, which look like the thing they mean, such as a mountain. Others are ideograms that show abstract ideas like "up" or "down." Most Chinese characters are actually radical-phonetic compounds. This means one part, the radical, hints at the meaning. The other part, the phonetic, hints at the sound.

This method makes up about 90% of the Chinese script.

Logograms connect to the modern world in surprising ways. Today, computers use a system called Unicode. This system aims to include every character from every language. It is the standard for digital communication on the Internet. You can see logograms used by people all over the world online. Even though we use many alphabets now, logograms are still very important. They show us how humans have found clever ways to turn sounds and ideas into art.
