Most letters in an alphabet only show sounds. But a logogram shows a real meaning. Some logograms look like small pictures. For example, a sign might look like a mountain.

These are called pictograms. Other signs show ideas, like the word "up."

Many old groups used these signs. People in Egypt and China used them. The Maya and Aztec people used them too. Most systems use a special trick to help. They use some signs to show sounds. This helps people write many words without a new sign for each one.

In Chinese writing, many signs are built in two parts. One part is a radical. This part hints at the meaning. The other part is a phonetic. This part hints at the sound. This way makes up most Chinese characters. Even today, we use logograms. The ampersand symbol "&" is one. It stands for the word "and." It is a simple sign with a big job.
