Keyboards have many keys. But some languages have more letters than keys. An input method, or IME, helps solve this. An IME is a program. It lets you make characters that are not on your keys.

How does it work? You use a set of steps. You can press a sequence of keys. You can also use a mouse. This helps people type Chinese, Japanese, or Korean.

Small devices use IMEs too. You can use a numeric keypad on a phone. You can also touch a screen. Some people use a stylus, which is a small pen. You can even swipe your finger to type. Some IMEs use word prediction. This means the program guesses your word. This helps you type much faster. Different systems use different names for these tools. Windows calls them Text Input Processors. Other systems like Android or macOS use the term IME. These programs make it easy to talk to the world.
