technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

An input device is a tool used to talk to a computer.

It lets you send data or signals into the system. One common tool is a keyboard. A keyboard has many buttons called keys. You press a key to type letters or use a function. Some keyboards use springs. These are called mechanical switches.

Another type is a pointing device. A mouse is a popular pointing device. You move it on a surface to move a pointer on the screen.

You can also use a touchpad or a touch screen. A touch screen uses direct input. This means you touch the same place where the pointer appears.

Some tools are called sensors. They pick up data from the physical world.

An accelerometer can detect if a device is moving fast. A thermometer measures how hot or cold it is. Some sensors are very small. These are called MEMS.

Other tools capture sight or sound. A camera turns images into digital files. A microphone lets you record your voice. You can even use a joystick to play games.
