Valves are found in many places. You use them at home in taps and washing machines. They are even inside your body. Your heart has valves to help blood move the right way.

Most valves have a few main parts. The body is the outer shell. It holds the fluid inside. A bonnet is a cover for the body. Inside, a disc or member moves to block the path. The disc sits against a seat to stop leaks.

A stem connects the disc to a handle. When you turn the handle, the stem moves the disc. Some valves use an actuator. An actuator is a device that moves the valve automatically.
