A tap is a valve that lets water out. In many places, tap water is safe to drink. People use it to cook, wash, and drink. It moves through pipes to reach homes.

In the past, many pipes were made of lead. Lead is a metal that can make people sick. Because of this, many people are replacing old lead pipes. Most new pipes are made of plastic or copper. Some pipes use many layers of different materials. These include things like aluminum and plastic.

Sometimes, tap water looks cloudy. This is often just tiny air bubbles. This happens when the water changes temperature or pressure. The cloudiness goes away very fast.

In some parts of the world, people do not have tap water. They might get water from wells or rain. In the United States, many people choose bottled water. They may do this because of taste or safety concerns. However, bottled water can also cause problems for the Earth. Using plastic bottles creates more waste and uses more power to move them.
