Tap water is water that comes to us through a valve called a tap.

In many countries, this water is safe enough to drink. People use it for many daily tasks like cooking and washing. This water travels through a system of indoor plumbing to reach our homes. While plumbing has existed since ancient times, it became very popular in developed countries during the late 1800s. Today, tap water is common in many regions. However, it is still lacking for many people living in poverty in developing countries.

To get to your sink, water moves through a network of pipes, fittings, and valves. These systems can be made from many different materials. Some pipes are made of plastics like polyethylene or polypropylene. Other pipes use layers of different materials, such as aluminum and plastic, pressed together. Metals like copper and carbon steel are also used for pipes. In the past, many people used lead pipes because lead was easy to shape and lasted a long time. Now, most people use copper or plastic instead because lead can be harmful to the human body.

Sometimes, you might notice that your tap water looks a bit cloudy.

This is usually not a problem. It often happens because of tiny air bubbles. These bubbles appear when the water changes its temperature or its pressure. Cold water can hold more air than warm water. When the water is heated or the pressure changes, the gas comes out of the liquid. This harmless cloudiness usually disappears very quickly as the gas escapes.

Keeping tap water clean is a very important job. Most rules about water quality are set at the treatment plant. The goal is to deliver safe, potable water to every tap. It is vital to keep the clean water separate from wastewater. In the past, contamination of drinking water caused many deaths. Even today, scientists look for certain bacteria to make sure the water stays safe. Sometimes water stays in the pipes for many hours or even days. This time is called "water age."

Many people have different feelings about tap water versus bottled water. Some people prefer bottled water because of the taste or because they worry about safety. In 1993, a large water outbreak in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, affected over 400,000 people. Such events can make people lose trust in their local water. However, using lots of plastic bottles can cause problems for our planet. It creates more waste and uses more energy for transportation. Many places try to encourage using tap water to help the environment.
