Plumbing is a system of parts that moves fluids from one place to another.

These systems use pipes, valves, tanks, and other tools to carry liquids. Most plumbing works to bring clean water to our homes for drinking. It also carries waste away through drainage and sewage systems. Some plumbing even helps with heating and cooling. This is done by using water to move thermal energy. Plumbing is very important for keeping people healthy and clean.

How a plumbing system works depends on the type of fluid it moves. For fresh water, pipes carry pressurized and treated water into a building.

These pipes can be made of metal or plastic. Some systems use gravity to move water through channels. Other systems use pipes that are made by casting or welding. These are often called pipes and have thick walls. Tubes are often made through extrusion and have thinner walls.

To join these parts, workers use special methods like soldering or solvent welding.

People have been building plumbing systems for thousands of years. The Mesopotamians used clay sewer pipes around 4000 BCE. They used these pipes to remove waste and catch rainwater. The city of Uruk even had latrines made of brick and clay pipes. In Egypt, copper pipes were found at the Pyramid of Sahure by 2400 BCE.

The Romans later made plumbing very advanced with large aqueducts. They used lead pipes for many different jobs. The word "plumber" comes from the Latin word for lead, which is plumbum.

History shows that different materials were used in different times and places. In the 16th and 17th centuries, London used pipes made of hollowed-out logs. These wooden pipes were sealed together with hot animal fat. In the United States, galvanized iron was common from the late 1800s until 1960. After World War II, people realized that lead could be dangerous to health. This led to a sharp decline in using lead for drinking water. Today, copper and plastic are much more common for water lines.

Modern plumbing connects to many things you see every day. When you turn on a tap, water flows through a pipe to your sink.

Most large cities now send waste to sewage treatment plants. These plants help clean the water before it goes back into rivers. You might also see pipes used in heating systems, like steam in New York City. Even if you do not see them, these hidden paths keep our world running smoothly. Understanding plumbing helps us see how our cities stay clean and safe.
