Some rooms also have a bidet, which is a tool used for washing. In the United States, people use different names for these rooms. They might call a small room a powder room or a washroom. In the United Kingdom, people often use words like the loo or the water closet.

The walls and floors must be made of materials that do not let water in. Many people use ceramic, glass, or smooth plastic because these are easy to clean. Since these surfaces can feel cold, some homes use heated floors with electric mats or hot water tubes. Lighting is also very important for tasks like shaving or grooming. To stop shadows on your face, a mirror should have two lights placed at least one foot apart. All lights in a bathroom must be splashproof to keep people safe from electricity.

People have been using baths for a very long time.

The first records of bathing go back to 3000 B.C. In those days, water was seen as a way to purify both the body and the soul. People often had to wash themselves before entering a sacred area. In ancient times, communal baths were often built in a separate area away from where people lived. In some parts of the world, washing together is still a social activity. For example, people in Japan use shared baths called sento, and people in the Islamic world use hammams.

Ancient civilizations built amazing systems for bathing and water.

The Romans built large public baths called thermae for relaxation and meeting friends. Wealthy Roman families even had their own private baths inside their houses. We can still see ruins of these places today, such as the Roman Baths in England. Even earlier, a bathtub was found at the Palace of Knossos in Crete from 1700 B.C. In the town of Akrotiri on the island of Santorini, archaeologists found a very advanced plumbing system. This system used alabaster tubs and could move hot and cold water separately.

Today, we see many different types of bathrooms in our homes.

An en suite bathroom is attached directly to a bedroom. A Jack and Jill bathroom is a room shared between two different bedrooms. In the United States, real estate listings use specific terms to describe rooms. A master bathroom usually has a shower and a tub next to the largest bedroom. A full bathroom has a toilet, a sink, and a tub or shower. A half bath, or powder room, only has a toilet and a sink. These different designs help make sure everyone has a comfortable place to wash.
