A room is an enclosed space within a building or a ship. It is surrounded by walls and has an entrance. This entrance is usually a door or another dividing structure.

A room connects to a passageway, another room, or the outdoors. Most rooms are large enough for several people to move around in. The size and furniture of a room help with the activity inside.

Rooms can be found in houses, ships, or even trains.

Rooms work by separating different activities into specific areas. Work rooms help with household chores like cooking or cleaning. A kitchen is used to prepare and store food. A laundry room is a place for washing and ironing clothes. Some rooms are made for comfort and cleanliness. A bathroom might have a toilet and a sink. In the past, kitchens were often kept far from the main house. This helped to reduce fire risks and keep smells away.

People have used rooms for many thousands of years. The Minoan culture used clearly defined rooms around 2200 BC. Excavations at Akrotiri on Santorini show these early rooms. These buildings even had rooms built above other rooms. They used staircases to connect them. Ancient Rome also had very complex building forms. They even had some of the first rooms for indoor bathing. The Maya in Central America had advanced rooms around several hundred AD. The Anasazi in North America also had early room structures.

There are many different types of rooms used today. Social rooms are places where people meet and talk. A great hall is a very large room for many people. It can be used for big banquets or for dancing. A drawing room is a more private place for friends. Bedrooms are used for sleeping and resting. A nursery is a special bedroom for babies or young children. Some houses have a small room called a box room. In the United Kingdom, these are often used for storage.

Many rooms serve more than one purpose. In small homes, a single room might do many jobs. This is common in a studio apartment or a bedsit. A great room is a large open area. It combines the kitchen, dining, and living areas without many walls. Some people use an en-suite room for privacy. This type of room includes a private washroom. It often has a shower, a sink, and a toilet. These setups help create a peaceful environment for living.
