It is a place where people find privacy and rest. Most bedrooms have furniture like a bed and a closet. A closet is a small space used to store clothes. You might also see a nightstand near the bed.

This small table can hold a lamp or an alarm clock. Some people also use a dresser with drawers for their things. A bedroom can show a person's unique style and personality.

Setting up a bedroom involves many different choices. Beds come in many sizes for different people. A crib is for a tiny infant to sleep in. A toddler or child might use a single or twin bed. Adults might use larger beds like a queen or a king.

Mattresses can be soft or firm for comfort. They are made from many materials like foam, latex, wool, or silk. Innerspring mattresses are the most common kind people buy today. People also use bedrooms to keep out noise or bright light.

Bedrooms have changed a lot through history. In the 14th century, people in Medieval Europe used mattresses filled with hay. Some people used broom straws for their bedding too. By the 16th century, mattresses filled with feathers became popular. People who could afford them felt very lucky to have feathers. In the 18th century, cotton and wool became more common. The first mattress with metal coils was not made until 1871.

A futon is a soft bed that people unroll each night. They roll them up and put them away in the morning. In very crowded cities, there are even capsule hotels. These are tiny rooms that are just big enough to lie down in. These small hotels can be found in places like Singapore or Taiwan.

Modern bedrooms are often used for more than just sleeping. Many people spend a lot of time in their rooms now. In the 2010s, having a television in a bedroom became common. In America, 43% of children ages 3 to 4 have a TV in their room. You might also find computers or video game consoles there. Some bedrooms even have a desk for doing school work.
