Most modern beds use a soft mattress on a bed frame. The mattress might rest on wood slats or a sprung base. Some beds use a box spring, which is a large box with springs inside. This helps support the mattress and provides suspension. Beds come in many sizes for different people. You might see tiny bassinets for infants or large king-size beds for two people.

Some beds are special, like bunk beds with two tiers and a ladder. Others, like sofa beds or murphy beds, can fold away to save space.

To make a bed comfortable, people use many different layers. Most beds have a pillow made of soft, padded material for the head.

We also use bedding to stay warm and insulated. This includes bed sheets, quilts, or a duvet. Bedding is the part of the bed that is not furniture. This is helpful because you can wash or air out the sheets and blankets easily. Some beds even have extra parts like a headboard to lean against. Others use a bed skirt or a valance sheet to hide the frame.

People have been making beds for a very long time. Scientists found grass bedding from at least 200,000 years ago.

They think people used insect-repellent plants and ash to stay clean and warm. In the past, early beds were just piles of straw, animal skins, or dried leaves. In Scotland, people used raised stone boxes for bedding between 3200 BC and 2200 BC. In South Africa, bedding made of sedge was found in Sibudu Cave from around 3600 BC. Moving beds off the ground helped people avoid dirt, drafts, and pests.

Different cultures created very different styles of beds.

Ancient Egyptians used high beds with steps and sometimes stone headrests. The Greek poem *The Odyssey* describes a bed made from a huge olive tree trunk. Ancient Romans had many kinds of beds, including a marriage bed and a table bed for eating. In the Middle Ages, luxury beds often had curtains to block out drafts. These were sometimes called four-poster beds. In the 17th century, King Louis XIV of France owned as many as 413 sumptuous beds.

Beds have changed as technology and materials changed.

In the 18th century, iron beds became popular because they did not have insects like wooden beds. Some beds were even used for important jobs, like the "bed of justice" in France. This was a bed where the king sat to show his power. Today, we have many choices, from inflatable air mattresses to comfortable permanent frames. Whether it is a simple hammock or a grand bed with gold embroidery, beds help everyone find rest.
