Mattress

A mattress is a large, rectangular pad used for resting. It is designed to support a person while they lie down to sleep. Most mattresses sit on a bed frame or a base. This base might be solid, like a platform bed. It could also be elastic, such as a wooden box spring. In Europe, some people use a divan. A divan is one single unit that holds both the mattress and the base.

Most mattresses are built in two main sections. The first part is the core, also called the support layer. This layer holds up your body weight. Many cores use steel coils, which are metal springs. Some coils, called Marshall coils, are wrapped in fabric pockets. These work independently so you do not feel a partner moving. The second part is the upholstery, or the comfort layer. This layer uses soft materials to make the bed cozy.

Inside the comfort layer, you will find different materials. Makers use things like cotton, wool, or foam. Some modern foams are made of latex or special gel. There is also an insulator pad. This pad sits between the springs and the soft stuffing. It stops the top layers from sinking into the metal coils. Everything is wrapped in a thick fabric called ticking. Ticking protects the inside of the mattress.

Mattresses have a very long history. The oldest known mattress is 77,000 years old from South Africa. It was made of layers of twigs and leaves. Some leaves used were from the Cryptocarya woodii plant. These leaves helped keep insects and mosquitoes away. In the past, people used straw, feathers, or horsehair. The word mattress comes from an Arabic word. It means "something thrown down" or a place to rest.

People use different types of mattresses based on what they need. Some use a mattress topper to make a bed softer. A topper is a thin, portable pad. It can make a bed warmer or cooler. In North America, many people use innerspring mattresses. In Europe, people often prefer foam or latex cores. You might also see a futon, which is a thin mattress. These are often filled with natural fibers like kapok or coir.
