Most mattresses have two main parts. The first part is the core. This layer supports your body. Many cores use metal springs called coils. Some coils are wrapped in fabric. We call these Marshall coils. They help people sleep without feeling a partner move. Other cores use foam made from rubber or plastic.

The second part is the comfort layer. This layer sits on top of the core. It uses soft things like cotton or foam. These materials make the bed feel cozy. A thick fabric called ticking wraps everything together. It protects the inside of the bed.

You can also use a mattress topper. This is a thin, soft pad. It goes on top of your bed. A topper can make a bed feel softer or warmer. It is also easy to move for travel.

Mattresses have a long history. The oldest ones were 77,000 years old! Those early beds used twigs and leaves. Some leaves even helped keep bugs away.
