Mattress

A mattress is a large, rectangular pad designed to support a person lying down. It is primarily used for sleeping on a bed frame or a bed base. Mattresses serve as the essential interface between the human body and the bed structure. They provide both structural support and physical comfort. Most mattresses consist of a protective outer case made of heavy cloth. This case contains various filling materials like cotton, foam, or metal springs.

Modern mattresses are built using a specific mechanical sequence. The structure begins with a core, also known as the support layer. This layer bears the weight of the sleeper. Above the core sits the upholstery, or the comfort layer. This layer provides the soft feeling against the skin. The upholstery is divided into three distinct parts. First, an insulator pad separates the core from the middle upholstery. This prevents the top layers from sinking into the springs. Next, the middle upholstery provides cushioning. Finally, a quilt forms the top surface.

There are several distinct types of mattress cores used today. Innerspring mattresses use steel coils to provide support. These coils are measured by their gauge, or thickness. A 14-gauge coil is 1.63 mm in diameter. Higher numbers indicate thinner, softer springs. Lower numbers like 12.5-gauge indicate thicker, firmer springs. There are four main types of steel coils. Bonnell coils are the oldest and use hourglass-shaped wire. Offset coils use flattened segments to conform to body shapes. LFK coils are unknotted and cylindrical. Marshall coils, or pocket springs, are individually wrapped in fabric. These allow springs to move independently without disturbing a partner.

Materials used in the comfort layer vary by region and preference. Manufacturers use flexible polyurethane foams, such as viscoelastic or latex. Some modern beds even include gel-infused foams for temperature control. Natural fibers are also common in certain styles. For example, futons often use natural materials. In Southeast Asia, kapok is a common filling. In South Asia, makers often use coir. These materials are all encased in a protective fabric called ticking. Ticking can be made of polyester or luxury blends containing silk and wool.

Mattress history reveals a very long timeline of human innovation. The oldest known mattress dates back 77,000 years to South Africa. It was constructed from layers of twigs and leaves. Specifically, it used leaves from the Cryptocarya woodii plant. These leaves acted as a natural insect repellent against mosquitoes. The word mattress itself has deep linguistic roots. It derives from the Arabic word "maṭraḥ," meaning something thrown down. During the Crusades, Europeans adopted Middle Eastern styles of sleeping on floor cushions. By the 19th century, mattress technology began to evolve rapidly.

In 1899, James Marshall introduced the first pocketed spring coil mattress. This invention changed how comfort was delivered. By the first half of the 20th century, North American mattresses typically used innersprings with cotton batting. Today, the market is much more diverse. In North America, innerspring models remain popular. However, there is increasing interest in all-foam and hybrid beds. Hybrid beds combine an innerspring core with high-end foam layers. In Europe, polyurethane and latex cores are much more common than in North America.

Mattresses must also sit on a proper foundation to function correctly. A traditional box spring uses a rigid frame with heavy-duty springs. An all-wood foundation uses support slats to provide a firmer base. Some people use a grid-top foundation made of metal or wood slats. These slats improve airflow to keep the mattress cool and dry. A mattress topper is another important tool for bed users. A topper is a thin, portable pad placed on top of a mattress. It can make a firm bed softer or help with temperature regulation. These tools allow people to customize their sleeping experience.
