Floor

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A floor is the bottom surface of a room or a vehicle. It serves as the essential platform that supports the weight of people and objects, which is known as a load. Floors can range from simple earthen surfaces in caves to complex, multi-layered structures in modern buildings. Because they must meet specific safety needs, many regions require floors to be built according to strict building codes.

Most modern floors consist of two primary components: a subfloor and a floor covering. The subfloor provides the underlying structural strength. In many buildings, this subfloor also houses essential services like electrical wiring, plumbing, and telecommunications. The floor covering is the top layer used to create a walking surface.

Subfloor construction varies depending on the building type. In wood-frame homes, floors are often built on joists, which are structural beams. In the United States and Canada, these joists are typically dimensional lumber, such as 2x8, 2x10, or 2x12 boards. A subfloor made of moisture-resistant plywood or composite sheeting is then attached to these joists. For high-quality construction, builders might use three layers of sheeting to prevent large floor tiles from cracking.

Another common method is the concrete slab floor, often used at ground level. To prepare for a slab, workers must first grade the site by removing topsoil and organic material. They then create a flat, level base using layers of sand and gravel to disperse force. To add strength, builders may install rebar, which is reinforcing steel, in continuous runs called "concrete girders." This is especially important if the slab must support part of the building's structure.

There are many different types of floor coverings available. Materials like carpet, area rugs, and resilient linoleum are often called floor coverings because they are frequently loose-laid. Other materials, such as hardwood, ceramic tile, and stone, are generally referred to as flooring.

The choice of material depends on several factors. These include cost, durability, noise insulation, and how much effort is required for cleaning. Some materials, like laminate or hardwood, must be avoided in areas with high moisture or condensation.

Engineers also design special floor structures for specific purposes. A floating floor is used to reduce noise or vibration. A sprung floor provides extra bounce to improve the safety of dancers and athletes. On a stage, a raked floor is tilted to improve the view for the audience. There are even decorative options, such as glass floors in elevators or mosaic designs.

Some historical designs, like the Nightingale floor, were built to make noise if an intruder walked on them.

Maintaining a floor involves managing several physical challenges. Wood floors may squeak if the wood rubs against other wood at a joint. This can sometimes be fixed with screws or nails. Concrete floors are very heavy and do not vibrate easily, but they are more expensive to build. Some chemical coatings, like epoxy, can make a floor slippery. Designers use science-backed slip resistance testing to ensure the floor provides enough traction to prevent falls.

Finally, floors are integrated into the larger systems of a building. They often act as the ceiling for the level below. Subfloors provide paths for utilities like air conditioning ducts, sewer lines, and even underfloor heating. In some cases, pipes for hot water or steam are run through holes drilled in the joists. Whether they are simple dirt or high-tech composite layers, floors are vital to the function of our built environment.
