A floor is the bottom surface of a room or a vehicle.

It is a very important part of any building. Floors can be made from many different materials. Some are simple, like the dirt floors found in caves. Others use modern technology to create many different layers. You might see floors made of stone, wood, or bamboo. They can even be made of metal.

The main job of a floor is to support weight. This is called a load. A floor must be strong enough to hold people and things.

Most floors work using two main layers. The first layer is the subfloor. This layer provides the strength you feel under your feet.

The second layer is the floor covering. This is the surface you actually walk on. People use many things for this covering. You might use a soft carpet or an area rug. Some people use resilient flooring like linoleum or vinyl. Others use hard materials like ceramic tile or stone.

The choice depends on cost, comfort, and how easy it is to clean.

Building a floor involves many careful steps. In modern buildings, the subfloor hides many useful things. Engineers build electrical wiring and plumbing right into it. Some floors even have heating systems built underneath. If a floor is built on joists, workers drill small holes through them. These holes act as paths for wires or pipes. In some places, like a basement, the floor might be a concrete slab. To prepare a slab, workers first grade the site to make it flat. They then add layers of sand and gravel to help spread out weight.

There are many special types of floors for different jobs. A glass floor might be used in an elevator so you can see through it. A sprung floor is made to be bouncy for dancers and athletes. This helps keep them safe while they move. A raked floor is tilted on a stage. This helps an audience see the performers better. Some floors are even designed to make noise. A Nightingale floor makes a sound if an intruder walks on it.

These special designs show how useful a floor can be.

Floors must be well-made to stay safe and quiet. If wood pieces rub together, they might make a squeaking sound. To stop this, people can use screws or nails to hold them tight. Some floors can vibrate when people walk on them. A floating floor can help reduce this noise. Concrete floors are very heavy and do not vibrate much. However, some floors can be slippery if they have a chemical coating. People use special testing to make sure a floor has enough traction. Keeping floors clean is also a huge job all over the world.
