A roof is the top covering of a building.

It acts as a shield for everything inside. A roof protects people from rain, snow, and wind. It also blocks the sun and extreme temperatures. Some roofs even provide extra living space, like a roof garden. In a garden conservatory, the roof lets in light while blocking the wind.

Every roof is part of the building envelope. This means it helps wrap the building to keep it safe.

A roof works using two main parts. The first part is the supporting structure. This is a frame of strong, rigid beams. These beams hold the weight of the roof. They usually rest on the walls of the building. Some special buildings use an A-frame design where the walls and roof are the same thing. The second part is the outer skin. This is the top layer that keeps the weather out.

This layer must be waterproof to keep the inside dry.

People have built roofs in many different ways throughout history. In prehistoric times, people used stone lintels to support roofs. Later, the ancient Romans used stone arches to span large spaces. For about 2,000 years, stone vaults were very common in big buildings. This changed during the Industrial Revolution. New iron beams became popular after that. In 1851, a famous building called the Crystal Palace was completed using these new methods.

Today, many houses use steel or reinforced concrete beams.

There are many different materials used for the outer skin. Some roofs use thatch made from straw or seagrass. Others use ceramic tiles, which have been popular for many centuries. Slate is a very durable material that can last 150 years. However, slate can be very expensive to install. In the 20th century, many people used asbestos because it was cheap and did not burn. Now, people often use metal like copper or steel.

Even living plants can be used to make a green roof.

You can see how the shape of a roof changes based on the weather. The pitch is the angle at which a roof rises. A steep pitch helps water run off quickly. This is very important for materials like thatch to stay waterproof. Some roofs are almost flat in places where it does not rain much. In the US, most homes have a sloped or pitched roof. This is often done for tradition or to look nice.

A person who specializes in building these is called a roofer.
