arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A porch is a special space located in front of a building entrance.

It can be a small room called a vestibule. Sometimes it is a large area that sits outside the main walls.

Porches are used in many kinds of buildings. You can find them on religious buildings like churches. You can also find them on secular buildings like houses or museums.

They give people a comfortable place to pause. You can wait before entering a building or relax after you leave.

There are many different ways to build a porch. Some are open on the outside with a railing called a balustrade. This railing is held up by small posts called balusters.

A porch might be part of the ground floor. It could also be on an upper floor. Some porches stay under the same roof as the rest of the house. Others look like towers or use fancy arches and columns.

A screened porch uses mesh to keep bugs out while letting air in. A sleeping porch is a special area meant for resting outdoors. A rain porch has a roof that reaches all the way to the ground.

People have used porches for a very long time. In the first half of the 6th century BCE, the Apadana palace was built in Persepolis.

This palace had unique open porches with columns on three sides. Ancient Greek buildings used a peristyle, which was a continuous porch with columns.

In Great Britain, churches began using porches by the early medieval times. These were often made of stone or wood. In the late medieval period, some church porches had two floors. The top room could be a school or a place for books.

Different places have their own special names for porches. In Hawaii, a roofed porch is called a lanai.

In the Southeastern United States, a rain porch is also called a Carolina porch. In Santa Fe, New Mexico, large porches for fun are called portals. The Grand Hotel in Michigan has a very famous porch. It is about 660 feet long!

Porches help people connect with their neighbors and their homes. In North America, people use porches to sit or to take off dirty work clothes.

In the Southern United States, porches are often wide enough for big parties. In ranch-style homes, they provide shade for the walls. Some modern builders want to use large porches to help build community ties. A porch can feel like extra living space during nice weather.
