A roof is the top covering of a building.

It protects us from rain, snow, wind, and sun. A roof has two main parts. First, it has a supporting structure. This part uses strong beams to hold the roof up. People use wood, steel, or iron for these beams. Some roofs even use stone arches.

Second, a roof has an outer skin. This is the top layer that keeps weather out. This layer can be made from many things. Some people use straw or grass. Others use clay tiles, metal, or slate. Slate is very strong and can last a long time.

The shape of a roof is also important. Many roofs have a pitch. A pitch is the angle at which the roof rises. A steep pitch helps water run off quickly. Some roofs are almost flat. This works well in places with very little rain. A person who builds roofs is called a roofer. They must make sure the roof stays strong and dry.
