Thatching is an old way to build a roof.

Builders use dry plants like straw, reeds, or palm leaves. They layer these plants on top of each other. This way, water runs off the roof and stays away from the inside. Because the plants are packed tightly, they trap air. This helps the roof act as insulation to keep a house warm.

Different places use different plants. In Bali, people use black fibres from the sugar palm.

In the Americas, groups like the Inca used thatch for their buildings.

In the UK, many roofs use wheat straw or water reed. A skilled worker can make a straw roof last over 50 years. They use small staples called spars to hold the plants in place. These spars are made from twisted hazel sticks.

Some people think thatch burns very easily. However, some say it burns slowly, like a closed book. Most fires happen because of problems with chimneys. To stay safe, people use smoke detectors in the roof.

Thatching is becoming popular again. People like it because it is a sustainable way to build. This means it is friendly to the Earth.
