Threshing is the way farmers get grain ready to eat.

It is the step after reaping the crops. Threshing loosens the edible part of the grain from the straw.

In the past, this work took a long time. People once used single sticks to beat the grain. Later, they used a tool called a flail. A flail is two sticks joined together.

In ancient Egypt, people used animals to help. They drove oxen or sheep over the grain. This helped tread the seeds out.

After beating the grain, farmers must clean it. This is called winnowing. They toss the mixture into the air. The wind blows away the light chaff. The heavy grain falls back down.

In 1786, Andrew Meikle made a new machine. It used revolving rollers and a beating drum. This made the work much faster. Today, most farmers use a combine harvester. This big machine harvests and threshes in the field. Some people still hold threshing bees. These are festivals where neighbors gather to celebrate the harvest.
