Tillage

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Tillage is the way farmers prepare soil for plants. They do this by digging, stirring, or turning the dirt.

This work helps crops grow well.

There are two main types of tillage. Primary tillage is deep work. It loosens the soil and mixes in plant food. This makes the ground look rough. Secondary tillage is lighter work. It makes the surface smooth. A smooth surface creates a good seedbed.

This step also helps kill weeds. It can pull weeds up or bury their leaves.

Farmers use many tools for this job. Long ago, people used hands and shovels. They also used animals like oxen or water buffalo.

Today, most farmers use big tractors. Some use special methods like conservation tillage. This leaves some old plant parts on top of the dirt. This helps stop the soil from blowing away. Using these methods can also save fuel and help the soil stay healthy.
