It is the soil where seeds first grow. This bed helps more seeds wake up and sprout.

Farmers want the soil to be loose and smooth. There should be no large lumps. This makes it easy to plant seeds at the right depth. Loose soil also helps roots grow well. For example, carrots might not grow straight in rocky soil.

To make a seedbed, people must clean the area. They remove rocks and old plant bits. This helps stop bugs and sickness from reaching the seeds. People also level the ground. This helps water flow away evenly.

Next, they break up hard dirt. This lets air and water get inside. Small seeds need very fine soil. People can use a rake to make the soil fine. Some people add compost to make the soil better. They might also add fertilizer. This adds food like nitrate and phosphate to the dirt. This helps the young plants stay strong as they grow.
