Tillage

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Tillage is how farmers prepare the earth for planting new crops. It involves moving the soil through digging, stirring, or overturning it. This work is important because it helps plants grow better. Farmers use tillage to loosen the ground and mix in nutrients like fertilizer. It also helps kill weeds that might steal water or sunlight from the crops. By managing the soil this way, farmers create a healthy place for seeds to start their lives.

There are two main ways to till the land. Primary tillage is the first, deeper step. It makes the soil soft and mixes in old plant material. This leaves the ground with a very rough surface. Secondary tillage is a lighter, shallower step that follows. It makes the soil finer and smoother to create a perfect seedbed. This step can also help control weeds during the growing season.

People have been tilling the earth for a very long time. At first, humans used their own hands and simple tools like shovels. They also used animals like pigs or oxen to help move the dirt. The wooden plow was a huge invention for early farmers. The earliest evidence of plowing comes from Mesopotamia around 4000 BCE. Later, the steel plow helped farmers work in the tough American Midwest.

Many different tools can do this work. Farmers use harrows, rotary tillers, and even big tractors. In the mid-1930s, two men named Frank and Herbert Petty made the Petty Plough. This special tool could be steered to work around trees in an orchard. Today, many farmers use conservation tillage to protect the land. This method leaves at least 30% of old plant bits on the surface. This helps stop the soil from washing or blowing away.

While tillage helps crops, it can also cause some problems. If the soil is worked too much, it can lose its strength. This can lead to erosion, where the good topsoil blows away in storms. In the 1930s, this caused the Dust Bowl in the United States. Some farmers now use zone tillage to help. This method only stirs a narrow strip of soil where the seeds go. This helps keep the rest of the ground healthy and strong.
