Farmers use these machines for a task called secondary tillage. This means they work the soil after it has already been plowed. There are two main ways these tools work. Some have metal teeth called shanks that pierce the ground as they are dragged.

They help make the ground ready for growing food.

Cultivators help plants grow in two important ways. First, they prepare a seedbed before planting starts. This makes the soil loose, smooth, and full of air. This is much better for tiny seeds than hard ground.

Second, they help control weeds once crops are growing. The tools can pull weeds out of the dirt. They can also bury weed leaves under the soil. This stops the weeds from using sunlight to grow.

A cultivator is special because it works near the surface. This lets it hit weeds without hurting the main crops.

People have been scratching the soil for a long time. For thousands of years, people used simple tools like hoes.

There are many different types of cultivators used today. Small ones are made for home gardens.
