A road roller is a heavy vehicle used in construction.

These machines help build roads and foundations. They work by pressing down on soil, gravel, or asphalt. This process makes the ground flat and very strong. Some rollers use their heavy weight to do this. Other machines use a vibrating motion to help. This shaking helps a small machine work like a huge one.

There are many ways these machines work. A padfoot roller has a drum with bumps. These bumps are also called sheep's feet. Because the pads have less surface area, they pack soil down very tightly. Next, a smooth drum roller comes to flatten high spots. Some rollers use pneumatic tyres, which are big rubber tires. These tires move in a way that kneads the surface. This kneading action helps seal the top of a road.

Road rollers have a long history.

The very first rollers were pulled by horses. They were likely tools borrowed from farms. Later, self-powered vehicles began to appear in the mid-19th century. These early machines were steam rollers. Some companies in the US used steam rollers until the 1950s. In the UK, they stayed in use until the early 1970s.

As engines got better, new types of rollers arrived. People moved from steam to kerosene and gasoline. Eventually, diesel engines became the most common choice. Today, almost all road rollers use diesel power. Some machines are very large and expensive. A ride-on roller can cost more than US$150,000. On big freeways, workers might use a Caterpillar 815 or 825 series machine. These are very heavy and have a powerful pushing force.

You can see these machines working in many places. They do not just build roads for cars. They are also used at landfills to press down trash. This helps make more room for waste. You might also see them on regional roads. Some rollers are small enough for one person to walk behind. Others are huge machines that a person rides on. Whether they are smooth or bumpy, they keep our world level.
