Asphalt concrete is a very important material used all over the world. You can see it on roads, parking lots, and even at airports.

In North America, people often just call it asphalt, blacktop, or pavement. In the United Kingdom, they might call it tarmac or bitumen macadam. It is a composite material, which means it is made by mixing different things together. This mixture is used to create smooth surfaces for cars and planes to travel on.

The way it works is quite simple but very clever. It consists of mineral aggregate, which is a collection of rocks, sand, or gravel. This aggregate is held together by a sticky substance called bitumen. Bitumen acts like a strong glue for the stones.

To make hot-mix asphalt, workers heat the bitumen so it becomes less thick. They also dry the rocks to remove any moisture. Then, they mix the hot rocks and liquid bitumen together. The mixture must be laid down and pressed flat while it is still very hot.

People have used versions of this material since ancient times. In places like Egypt, Babylon, and Rome, people used natural asphalt to waterproof baths and tunnels.

In 1829, a footpath in France used natural asphalt mixed with 7% aggregate. Later, in 1870, a chemist named Edward de Smedt invented a way to use heated asphalt mixed with sand. A big change happened in 1902 when Edgar Purnell Hooley created a new process. He used a steam heated mixer to combine petroleum bitumen with gravel. His company was called Tar Macadam, which is where the word "tarmac" comes from.

There are many different types of asphalt mixtures used today. Hot-mix asphalt is the most common type for big highways and racetracks.

Warm-mix asphalt is another type that uses additives like waxes or zeolites. This allows the mix to be made at lower temperatures, which uses less fuel. In 2012, nearly 25% of asphalt produced in the US was warm-mix. There is also cold-mix asphalt, which uses a special liquid to make the bitumen easy to work with. This type is often used for patching holes in the road.

Asphalt is a great choice for many different reasons. One reason is that it is often more economical than other materials. It also makes less noise when cars drive over it compared to concrete.

The way the liquid bitumen works also helps with water. It allows workers to make the road surface slightly curved so rain drains to the edges. However, the road can still face hard jobs from the weather. For example, frost can cause the ground to heave and damage the surface.
