Construction aggregate is a huge category of small, grainy materials.

These materials include natural things like sand, gravel, and crushed stone. They are used to make composite materials, which are mixtures of different things. The two most common mixtures are concrete and asphalt. Aggregate is actually the most mined material in the entire world. Every year, people produce about 6 billion tons of concrete.

This massive amount of concrete relies on aggregate to stay strong. Without these tiny rocks and grains, our buildings would not be as sturdy.

Aggregate works by adding strength to a mixture. When it is mixed with cement, it helps form concrete. When it is mixed with bitumen, it forms asphalt. It also helps with drainage, which is the way water moves through the ground. Because aggregate lets water pass through easily, it is used in drains for roads and walls. It can also be used as a base layer under roads or railroads. This base layer is very important for keeping things level. It prevents a road or a building from settling unevenly into the dirt.

People have used sand and stone for building foundations for thousands of years. The Roman Empire was very good at using these materials. They used aggregate to build their famous roads and aqueducts. An ancient writer named Vitruvius even wrote about how to manage materials wisely. He said architects should use what is nearby to save money. He noted that if there is no pit sand, people can use sand from rivers or the sea. Today, we use modern blasting to create large quarries for these stones.

There are many different types of stones used today. In 2006, the United States produced 1.72 billion tonnes of crushed stone.

A huge part of that was limestone, which reached 1,080 million tonnes. Granite production was also large, at 268 million tonnes. Other stones like basalt, dolomite, and marble are used too. In the U.S., sand and gravel production reached 1.32 billion tonnes in 2006.

Most of this material is moved by heavy trucks from the quarry to where it is needed.

We can also find aggregate in recycled materials. Instead of just mining new rocks, we can use old things. For example, crushed glass can be used in many building projects. This helps recycle glass that cannot be turned into new bottles. We can also use waste from making iron and steel, which is called slag. Even old concrete and asphalt can be crushed to be used again.

This way of reusing materials helps reduce waste in our world.
