Gravel is a collection of loose rock fragments.

It is a very important material for building things. People use it to make roads and strong buildings. It also helps us find water deep underground. Natural gravel can act like a sponge for water. This is because it has high hydraulic conductivity. This means water can move through the gaps very quickly.

Many places use gravel to hold water in aquifers. An aquifer is a place underground that holds water.

Most gravel starts as large beds of solid rock. Over time, the rock breaks apart through weathering. This is a slow way that rocks crumble. Rivers then carry these small pieces away. As the rocks tumble in the water, they become smooth. They lose their sharp edges and become rounded.

This often happens within just a few tens of kilometers. You can find gravel in many places. It sits in river channels and near the ocean. It also forms in places called alluvial fans.

Scientists use special scales to name different sizes of gravel. The Udden-Wentworth scale is one way they do this. It divides gravel into two main groups. The first group is called granular gravel. These pieces are smaller. The second group is called pebble gravel. These pieces are larger.

Other groups use different rules. For example, the ISO 14688 scale uses three grades. It calls them fine, medium, and coarse. These names help builders pick the right size.

Making and using gravel is a huge business. In 2020, the U.S. produced about 960 million tons of construction sand and gravel.

This was worth about $12.6 billion. Almost half of all this material goes into making concrete. Concrete is the heavy stuff used for sidewalks and walls. Much of the rest goes into making roads. It can be the base under the road or the surface. Some people even use crushed stone instead of natural gravel.

There are many different types of gravel to learn about. Bank gravel is found next to rivers. Bench gravel is found on the sides of valleys.

Some gravel is even called pea gravel because it is small. It is about the size of a garden pea. People use it for walkways or fish tanks. There is also something called pay gravel. This is a nickname for gravel that has gold in it. People use it to find precious metals.
