A pebble is a small piece of rock.

Scientists use a scale called the Udden-Wentworth scale to name them. Pebbles are bigger than tiny granules. However, they are smaller than large cobbles. A rock made mostly of pebbles is called a conglomerate.

These stones are very useful for many things. They can be used for building or for decoration.

Water helps make pebbles look the way they do. On a beach, ocean waves wash over loose rock particles. This constant movement makes the pebbles smooth and rounded. Most beach pebbles are between 2 mm and 50 mm wide. They can be white, black, red, or green.

In rivers, flowing water washes over rocks on the bottom. Because river currents are gentler than ocean waves, river pebbles are usually not as smooth. Their color depends on the soil and the water.

Humans have used pebbles for a very long time. Pebble tools are among the earliest man-made items. These date back to the Palaeolithic period of human history.

Today, we use them in many new ways. People use them for landscaping around pools or patios. They can also be used for walkways and driveways. Some people even use them to make gardens on rooftops.

There are many places to find these stones on Earth. Many pebble beaches line the Pacific Ocean. These go from Canada down to Argentina. You can also find them in Northern Europe and Australia.

Some places have huge banks of pebbles called shingle. At the River Ore in England, these banks can make sailing difficult. Pebbles can also be manufactured from marble or granite. These are made to be specific sizes for different jobs.

Even other planets have pebbles!

NASA's Curiosity rover found pebbles on Mars. These pebbles were found in an ancient streambed. They range from the size of sand to the size of golf balls. Scientists think a stream once flowed there at a walking pace. That stream was likely as deep as a person's ankle or hip. This shows that water worked on Mars just like it does on Earth.
