A steamroller is a heavy machine used for leveling surfaces.

These machines help make roads and airfields smooth and flat. They use a steam engine to get their power. The flattening happens because the machine is very heavy. It uses large, smooth rolls to press down on the ground. This weight makes the surface even and solid.

Most steamrollers work using a three-roll setup. They have two large, smooth wheels at the back. In the front, they have one wide roll instead of wheels. This wide roll is often two narrow cylinders on one axle. This design makes it easier for the driver to steer. Some special versions called "tandems" had two wide rolls. These were great for rolling asphalt, which is a sticky material for roads.

History shows how these machines changed over time. Before 1850, the name meant a machine for steel plates. In 1859, Louis Lemoine patented an early mobile version in France. The company Aveling and Porter was the first to sell them well. In 1867, they made a practical roller that weighed over 30 tons. It was tested in places like London and Rochester. Soon, these machines were sent all over the world.

Different makers created many interesting types of rollers. Aveling and Porter was the most famous maker in Britain. Other companies like Marshall, Sons & Co. also built them. In America, J. I. Case made a version for farms. Some machines were "convertibles" that could change their job. They could be a steamroller or a traction engine for pulling loads. This allowed them to fix roads in summer and pull things in winter.

Today, we can still see these amazing machines in action. Many are kept in museums or used in steam fairs. People even hold re-enactments of old road-making teams. Some old rollers even ended up in playgrounds for children. Even though we use diesel engines now, people still call them steamrollers. They represent a strong force that keeps moving forward.
