A steam engine is a machine that uses steam to do work.

It is a heat engine that uses steam pressure to move parts. This pressure pushes a piston back and forth inside a cylinder. A connecting rod and a crank then turn that movement into a spinning force.

This spinning motion can turn wheels or drive heavy machinery. Most steam engines are external combustion engines. This means the fire that makes the steam is separate from the steam itself. This process follows a way of working called the Rankine cycle.

How does the engine actually work? First, heat is used to turn water into steam. This steam creates pressure that pushes on a piston. In some engines, the piston moves back and forth in a repeating way.

In other designs, the steam turns a turbine. A turbine is a device with blades that spin when steam hits them. These different ways of moving can provide power for many tasks. The way the steam is used can change how much work the engine does.

People have explored steam power for many centuries. Hero of Alexandria described a device called an aeolipile in the first century AD.

In 1606, Jerónimo de Ayanz y Beaumont patented a steam pump for mines. Thomas Savery later made the first steam device used for business. Around 1712, Thomas Newcomen built an engine that gave steady power.

In 1764, James Watt made a huge improvement. He used a separate vessel to cool the steam. This helped the engine do more work with less fuel.

Steam engines changed the world through many different uses. During the Industrial Revolution, they powered many large factories.

They also replaced sails on ships with paddle steamers.

On land, steam locomotives moved people and goods on railways.

High-pressure engines were much more powerful than older ones. Richard Trevithick and Oliver Evans helped introduce these in 1801 and 1802. These engines were small enough to be used for transport.

We see the legacy of steam engines in many places today. Most cars now use internal combustion engines instead of steam.

However, steam turbines are still very important for making electricity. These large turbines are much more efficient than small ones. Some large piston engines are even still made in Germany. Steam enthusiasts also work to save old engines for history. Many of these old machines are kept in museums for us to see.
