Steam is made by heating water. This creates pressure. The pressure pushes a piston inside a cylinder. A piston is a part that moves back and forth.

A rod and a crank can turn this movement into a spinning motion. This allows the engine to turn wheels or other parts.

People have studied steam for a long time. Hero of Alexandria described a device called an aeolipile in the first century AD.

Later, Thomas Savery made a steam pump for water. In 1712, Thomas Newcomen made an engine that could provide steady power. James Watt made a big change in 1764. He used a separate vessel to cool the steam. This made the engine use much less fuel.
