Boiler (power generation)

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A boiler is a tool that makes steam.

Steam Generator

It works by using heat to boil water. Most boilers have a firebox. This is a part where fuel burns. People use coal, oil, or gas to make the fire. Some use nuclear power too.

The heat from the fire moves into the water. This turns the water into steam. This steam is called saturated steam. It stays at the boiling point. If you heat it even more, it becomes superheated steam.

This extra heat makes the steam more useful. It can help a turbine make power.

To keep the fire burning well, the boiler needs air. This air flow is called draught. Some boilers use fans to pull air in. Others use fans to push air in. Large boilers often use both ways.

Boilers come in many shapes. Some are small for trains. Others are very big for power plants. Some use many small tubes to move heat. This helps the water boil faster. Engineers have worked for a long time to make them better.
