Sometimes steam looks like a white mist. We call this wet steam. Other times, steam is invisible. This happens when all the water is a gas. This is called saturated steam. If you heat it even more, it becomes superheated steam.

When water turns to steam, it grows very fast. It gets 1,700 times bigger in volume. This big change can move parts in a machine. These machines are called steam engines.

Steam engines helped start the Industrial Revolution. Today, steam helps make 80 percent of the world's electricity. Large machines called steam turbines use this power.

We use steam in many ways. It can cook food or heat buildings. It can also clean floors and iron clothes.
