Condensation

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Water can change its form. Sometimes it turns from a gas into a liquid. We call this condensation.

Water vapor is a gas in the air. It is often invisible. When this gas cools down, it changes. It can also happen if the gas is squeezed. This makes the gas reach a limit. It cannot stay a gas anymore. Then, it turns into liquid water drops.

In the sky, this makes clouds. Tiny bits in the air help the water gather. Some microbes even help this happen.

In a home, condensation can be tricky. It happens when warm air hits a cold surface. This can make windows wet. It can also cause mold or rot in wood. You can stop this by opening windows. Using a fan also helps move the air.

People use this to find water. They build fog fences to catch it. Some animals use it too. The thorny devil and darkling beetles get water this way.
