A liquid is a state of matter. It has a set volume. But it does not have a fixed shape.

A liquid will change shape to fit a container. This happens because of gravity.

Liquids are made of tiny bits called molecules. These molecules are held together by bonds. These bonds have middle strength. This allows the bits to slide past each other. They stay close together but can still move. This is why liquids can flow.

Heat changes how molecules act. When a liquid gets hot, the molecules vibrate more. They move further apart. If it gets too hot, it reaches a boiling point. Then it turns into a gas.

Cold also changes things. As a liquid cools, the molecules move closer. At the freezing point, they often form a pattern. This is called crystallization. The liquid then becomes a solid.

Some liquids are hard to flow. This resistance is called viscosity. Water has low viscosity. It flows easily. Ketchup has high viscosity. It is thicker.

Liquids also have surface tension. This is a force that pulls molecules inward. It makes liquids form round drops.
