Evaporation

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Evaporation is a way that liquids turn into gas. This happens at the surface of the liquid.

Liquids are made of tiny bits called molecules. These molecules bump into each other. They share power, which we call energy. Some molecules near the top get enough energy to escape. They fly into the air as a gas.

Heat makes this happen faster. Higher heat gives molecules more energy to move. The sun drives evaporation from oceans and lakes. This is a big part of the water cycle.

Evaporation also cools things down. This is called evaporative cooling. When the fastest molecules leave, the rest stay cooler. This is why sweat cools your body.

Other things help, too. Wind can speed it up by moving air away. A larger surface area also helps. If the air is already full of gas, it slows down. This is called humidity. In a closed space, it stops when the air is saturated.
