It works by turning liquid water into water vapor. This change is called evaporation. To evaporate, water must take heat from the air. This process makes the air temperature drop.

This method is very different from most air conditioners. Most systems use a cycle called vapor-compression. Evaporative coolers use much less power to work. They work best in dry places. In these dry lands, they also add moisture to the air. This can help keep skin and sinuses from getting too dry.

In ancient Persia, they used wind shafts on roofs. These are called windcatchers. They caught the wind to cool buildings. Today, many machines use a fan to pull air through wet pads. This helps the water turn into vapor more quickly. This cooling method is a very old and smart way to stay comfortable.
