It uses spinning blades to move air. These fans do not change the temperature of a room. They do not make the air colder like an air conditioner. Instead, they help you feel cool. Moving air helps sweat dry off your skin. This is called evaporation.

In the winter, fans can help you stay warm. Warm air naturally rises to the ceiling. You can set a fan to blow air upward. This pushes the warm air back down to the floor. This helps even out the heat in a room.

Fans have a long history. The first fans were in India around 500 BC. They were called punkahs. These used large leaves for blades. They moved back and forth by hand. Later, people used water to turn fans. In 1882, Philip Diehl made the first electric fan. He used a motor from a sewing machine.

Many fans today also have lights built in. This saves space in a room.
