It makes the air inside a room a comfortable temperature. It can also control humidity, which is how much water is in the air. This helps people stay safe in very hot weather. It can even prevent heat-related deaths.

Long ago, people used passive cooling to stay cool. They used special building designs to move air. One way was using windcatchers, which are parts of a building that catch the wind.

People also used thick walls or special gaps to let air flow.

Later, scientists found new ways to make things cold. In 1820, Michael Faraday found that compressing ammonia could chill air. In 1901, Willis Carrier built the first modern electrical air conditioning unit.

His machine helped a printing shop by controlling heat and moisture. This kept the paper and ink just right.

Today, we use many types of machines. Some are small for cars or single rooms. Others are huge for big buildings.

We also use heat pumps. These use a special valve to both heat and cool a space.
