Refrigeration is a way to make things cold. It works by taking heat away from a space. This heat is then moved to a warmer place.

Long ago, people had to find natural ways to stay cool. They used caves or stored snow in pits. Some people used salt to keep food fresh. In the 1800s, people cut ice from frozen lakes. They used this ice in special boxes to store food.

Later, scientists built machines to make coldness. In 1755, William Cullen used a pump to make a small amount of ice. Later, Jacob Perkins built the first working vapor-compression system. This is a set of steps that uses a special liquid to make cooling.

These machines changed how we live. We could now use refrigerated rail cars to move food. This helped people build big cities in hot places. Today, we use refrigeration in homes and stores. It helps us get fresh food from many farms.
