To work, a thermometer needs two main parts. First, it needs a sensor to feel the heat. This could be a bulb of liquid or a special sensor. Second, it needs a way to show a number. This might be a scale on a tube or a digital screen.

Long ago, people used air to show heat changes. They used a device called a thermoscope. In a thermoscope, air in a glass bulb warms up or cools down. This makes the level of water in a tube rise or fall.

Later, scientists made better tools. They used liquids in sealed glass tubes. This helped them get steady readings. Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit made a reliable tool using mercury.

Anders Celsius also made a famous scale. Today, we use thermometers in many ways. Doctors use them to check if you are sick. Scientists use them to study the Earth and space.
